"But only in their dreams can man be truly free. 'Twas always thus, and always thus will be."
За это эссе меня похвалили. Пожалуй, да. Это лучшее, что я писал за три месяца. Тема звучала как-то так:
Some companies promote their employees basing on their seniority, others - basing on their performance. Which do you prefer? Give reasons and examples to support your answer.
Временной лимит - 30 минут.
Different organizations manage their employees differently. This is true about any aspect of people management including promotions. Some companies promote their workers according to their seniority, while some do that according to their performance. Each of these approaches has its own advantages and to choose one of them we shuould understand both.
Promotion based on performance results in a fact that only best workers are being promoted, thus we can say that top-management team consists only of excelent quallification employees that can manage the company better. Also, preformance approach makes it clearly visible that some people are doing their work better than the others, therefore these people can be granted for their work. In turn, that can make these people work even better in regards to these grants.
On the other hand, promotion based on seniority has its own advantages that performance-based promotion lacks. First and the most obvious advantage is that only experienced workers are promoted. This leads a company to a stability, that can be achieved only if its managers have a lot of practical experience of doing their work. Although this stability is not always good because it can slow down company in its way due to inadequate managers' decisions. Second advantage of the seniority-based approach is the expectability of promotions. Employees know that if they work in a company for some amount of time they are getting promoted. And this also leads to stability but of another kind - stability of company members. It means that people better work at the current job for some more time to get a promotion, than change the job for another one.
Although I have said that both of these approaches have their advantages, I think it is better for a company to use performance-based approach or even its combination with seniority-based approach. It would guarantee that after a while only best and most experienced employees would manage the company, which in turn would be a ticket to a better future for a company.
